The Maker Midwife

Nurturing creativity. Crafting joy. Building community.

Caring for others and not myself

I’ve always loved crafting, but for most of my life, I never felt very creative. I’d watch others make beautifully layered scrapbook pages and intricate cards while mine felt simple and plain. I loved working with my hands, but comparison has a way of shrinking joy, and I often felt “less than.”

Over the years, I collected supplies — boxes, bins, bags full of paper, stickers, stamps, and tools — but I rarely touched them. Inspiration felt far away. Then one day, I stumbled into the world of Cricut videos. I didn’t understand much at first (other than “it cuts things”), but something in me woke up. My husband noticed it, too. For my birthday in August 2025, he surprised me with a Cricut Maker 4…and everything changed.

Since then, crafting has become a source of joy, clarity, and healing. I’ve made cards, stickers, shirts, mugs, towels, and more. I’ve added a mug press, a sublimation oven, and multiple heat presses to my little creative world. But the biggest shift wasn’t the tools — it was the permission I finally gave myself to create.

For years, I told myself I didn’t have space for crafting. Everything was tucked away, out of sight, out of reach. At the end of 2025, I decided to change that. I went through every box and bin, letting go of what no longer sparked joy and donating supplies to a friend who works with an at‑risk community. I bought clear organizers so I could see my supplies. I even found a discontinued rolling craft cart on clearance — a sign I couldn’t ignore — and built myself a space that felt like mine.

Through all of this, my husband kept cheering me on. He told me that watching me light up while crafting brought him joy. And that’s when I realized something important: I’ve spent 26+ years as a midwife and doula, caring for others, being on call 24/7, and pouring from a cup that was often empty. Crafting has given me a way to refill it.

Now, I’m building a community for people like me — people who love to make things but don’t always feel “creative enough.” A place where we show the messy parts, the learning curves, the imperfect cuts, and the joyful wins. A place where no one is judged and everyone is welcome.

Welcome to our community. Welcome to The Maker Midwife.

Creativity is a form of self care.

A way to come home to yourself.
